What Is Cotton Spunlace Nonwoven Fabric?
Mar 16, 2026
Simply put, cotton spunlace nonwoven fabric is a nonwoven material made from natural cotton fibers through a physical hydroentanglement process.
To understand this concept, we need to break it down into two parts:
Cotton (Raw Material): This means its main raw material is natural cotton. This gives the material its skin-friendly, soft, and naturally biodegradable properties.
Spunlace Nonwoven (Process): This means it is not made through traditional weaving or knitting processes, nor is it bonded with chemical adhesives. Instead, high-pressure micro-fine water jets are directed into the fiber web, causing the fibers to intertwine and entangle with each other, thereby consolidating into a fabric.

The Process
Traditional cotton fabric requires dozens of complex steps such as opening, carding, drawing, roving, spinning, and weaving to turn cotton into yarn and then into fabric. Cotton spunlace nonwoven skips the "spinning" step entirely.
Its production process mainly includes the following key stages:
Fiber Opening and Blending: Selected high-quality cotton fibers are opened and impurities are removed to ensure raw material purity.
Carding into a Web: The cotton fibers are carded by a carding machine into a uniform, thin fiber web. This "cotton web" is very fragile at this stage and holds its shape only through the weak friction between fibers.
Hydroentanglement (The Core Step): This is the most critical stage. The fiber web passes under precision high-pressure water jets. Tens of thousands of extremely fine, high-pressure water jets shoot vertically into the fiber web. Through the impact, rebound, and intertwining action of the water, the fibers undergo intense displacement, intertwining, entanglement, and interlocking-as if countless invisible hands have twisted them tightly together.
Dehydration and Drying: The fabric, now strengthened by hydroentanglement, is dehydrated, dried, and wound into rolls, finally forming the cotton spunlace nonwoven we see.
Key Point: No chemical adhesives are added throughout the entire process; it is formed purely by physical action, ensuring the purity and safety of the finished product.
Advantages
This unique process brings advantages that traditional materials cannot match:
1. Extreme Skin-Friendliness and Hypoallergenic Properties
Because the raw material is natural cotton and there are no chemical adhesive residues, cotton spunlace nonwoven offers excellent skin-friendliness. For sensitive skin, a baby's delicate skin, or a vulnerable post-operative wound, this material minimizes the risk of allergies and irritation.
2. Excellent High-Efficiency Water Absorption
The spunlace process makes the fibers fluffy with a three-dimensional crimped structure. The gaps between fibers can quickly capture and lock in moisture. Compared to ordinary woven fabrics, it has a stronger capillary effect and faster water absorption, making it an excellent choice for wet wipes and cleaning cloths.
3. Strong and Lint-Free
Through entanglement by high-pressure water jets, strong physical bonds are formed between the cotton fibers, giving the spunlace fabric high tensile strength. More importantly, because the fibers are entangled rather than bonded with chemical adhesives, it produces almost no lint or shedding during use, avoiding secondary contamination.
4. Eco-Friendly and Biodegradable
In today's era of increasingly stringent environmental regulations, the greatest advantage of cotton spunlace nonwoven lies in its "from nature, back to nature" attribute. In specific soil or water environments, it can biodegrade and return to nature, effectively alleviating the pressure of "white pollution."
Applications
Because it combines the comfort of cotton with the convenience of nonwoven fabric, its application scenarios are extremely wide:
- Personal Care: High-end baby wipes, makeup remover wipes, the surface layer of sanitary napkins and adult incontinence products.
- Medical and Healthcare: Medical dressings, surgical drapes, gauze substitutes, disposable bed sheets.
- Home Cleaning: Disposable kitchen wipes, oil-absorbing and stain-removing cloths, mop cloths.
- Beauty and Skin Care: Disposable mask base fabrics (especially high-end masks that need to carry essence).
