Does the Count and Density of Fabric Affect Its Texture?
Jul 04, 2025
The count is an indicator of the thickness of yarn; the higher the number, the finer the yarn.
Take pure cotton as an example:
Low-count yarn (e.g., 20S-40S): The yarn is thick, resulting in a fabric with a rugged, sturdy texture and good breathability, but a relatively rough surface (e.g., workwear fabric, coarse cotton shirts).
High-count yarn (e.g., 80S-120S): The yarn is as fine as hair, producing a fabric that is delicate, soft, and highly lustrous, with a smooth hand feel (e.g., high-end shirts, silk-like pure cotton fabrics).
Ultra-high-count yarn (e.g., 160S and above): Used exclusively by luxury brands, the fabric is as light as a cicada's wing with exceptional drape (e.g., haute couture dress fabrics).
Density refers to the number of warp and weft yarns per unit area of the fabric (e.g., "133×72" means 133 warp yarns and 72 weft yarns per square inch). The higher the number, the tighter the fabric.
Low density (e.g., < 200 threads): Large gaps between yarns create a lightweight, breathable, and soft fabric prone to wrinkling (e.g., summer gauze, voile), ideal for scenarios prioritizing coolness.
Medium density (e.g., 200-300 threads): A compact structure with a smooth hand feel and improved wrinkle resistance (e.g., standard poplin shirts, pure cotton bedsheets), balancing practicality and texture.
High density (e.g., >300 threads): Nearly opaque, the fabric is stiff, smooth, and has strong drape (e.g., high-density sateen, suit fabrics), suitable for categories requiring a crisp appearance.
Combining Count and Density
High count + Low density: Fine yarns but a loose structure, resulting in a feather-light, highly breathable fabric that may be sheer or prone to snagging, e.g., high-count pure cotton lace fabrics.
Low count + High density: Thick yarns but a tight structure, creating a stiff, wear-resistant fabric with a flat surface, e.g., denim, canvas.
High count + High density: Fine yarns and a tight weave, producing a smooth, durable fabric with high luster, combining drape and wrinkle resistance, e.g., pure cotton sateen.
