A Guide to Choosing the Gram Weight of Cotton Spunlace Non-Woven Fabric
May 07, 2026
Having worked with non-woven products for several years, I am often asked by customers: "What thickness of fabric should I choose?" To be honest, getting the gram weight right is tricky-too light, and the product won't hold up; too heavy, and costs go up.
Today, I'll break down everything you need to know about cotton spunlace non-woven fabric in the common range of 25gsm to 80gsm, to help you avoid costly mistakes.
25–35gsm: Ultra-Light Yet Indispensable
Fabrics in this range are thin, breathable, soft, and the most cost-effective.
Suitable products: Clothing dust covers, food delivery covers, disposable tablecloths, inner skin-friendly layers of masks.
For example, a dry-cleaning dust cover manufacturer I worked with initially used 40gsm fabric and struggled to control costs. After switching to 30gsm, the coverage remained sufficient while cutting costs by 20%. Disposable picnic tablecloths also work perfectly at 35gsm-single-use items don't need extra thickness.

40–60gsm: The All-Round Bestseller
This is my top-selling range by far.
Suitable products: Baby wipes, facial mask sheets, kitchen wipes, medical dressings.
Take facial masks: most affordable masks on the market use base fabric of 45–55gsm. Too thin fails to hold essence; too thick feels uncomfortable on the face. 50gsm cotton spunlace fabric absorbs 8–10 times its weight in liquid, with ideal fit and adhesion.
For baby hand-and-mouth wipes, around 45gsm is optimal-gentle on skin and tear-resistant. One customer used 38gsm and received complaints about tearing easily; upgrading to 50gsm slightly raised costs but drastically improved customer satisfaction.

65–80gsm: Sturdy, Durable, and Substantial
At this weight, the fabric feels thick and cloth-like, not paper-like.
Suitable products: Industrial wipes, household cleaning cloths, high-hydration facial masks, salon compressed towels.
For wipes: 65gsm is the minimum for auto repair shops (cleaning oil) and factories (cleaning precision equipment). 75gsm cotton spunlace absorbs oil quickly, is lint-free after repeated rubbing, and lasts three times longer than lighter options-saving money overall.
High-end masks also use this weight: luxury masks advertised as "stay moist for 30 minutes" typically use 70gsm+ base fabric, with superior water retention and liquid capacity. Standard masks don't need this thickness, as excess essence cannot be absorbed.

How to Choose? 3 Simple Rules
If you're still unsure, ask yourself these questions:
Disposable or reusable? Disposable items: stay under 35gsm. Reusable wipes: start at 60gsm.
Will it contact liquids? Wipes and masks need at least 45gsm to hold liquid.
Cost-sensitive? Choose the lightest weight that meets performance needs-every extra gram adds cost.
