Which Fabrics Are Prone To Pilling?

Nov 01, 2023

What clothes are prone to pilling?

1. Wool and blended fabrics: knitted sweaters, woolen fabrics, woolen sweaters, etc.

2. Chemical short fibers and its blended fabrics: polyester cotton, polyester viscose, nitrile cotton, etc.

3. Knitting category of lightweight fabrics: pure cotton stretchers, modal, viscose, Lyocell and other recycled cellulose fiber fabrics.

The process of pilling:

1. Fuzzing: the fabric is subjected to external friction, when the friction is greater than the strength of the fibers or the friction or cohesion between fibers, the fiber ends are pulled out to form loops and fuzz, which is the surface fuzzing of the fabric.

2. Entangled into a ball: When the fuzz is exposed to a certain length, the fuzz at a similar distance is entangled into a ball due to repeated extension and retraction due to rubbing and friction. (Hair balls are prone to accumulating stains, which affects the aesthetics of the fabric).

3. Hair ball growth: Entangled fibers are tightly to form small balls, which are hung on the surface of the fabric by strong and tough fibers and continue to grow.

4. Ball shedding: When the fabric continues to be subjected to friction, the fibers connecting the ball will break due to repeated stretching, bending, and fatigue, and fall off from the fabric surface. (Some fabrics that are prone to pilling give people a feeling of difficulty pilling due to the tendency of the pommel to fall off).

Factors affecting pilling:

1. Fiber strength: high strength>low strength.

2. Fiber length: short fiber>long fiber.

3. Fiber fineness: fine fiber>coarse fiber.

4. Friction between fibers: High friction, fibers are not easy to slide and pilling.

5. Fiber blending is prone to pilling: Blended fabrics of chemical fibers, wool, cotton, and regenerated cellulose fibers are prone to pilling, because chemical fibers have strong ball fibers, they are not easy to fall off.

What should I do if my clothes get pilling?

1. Use a comb to brush in one direction at the pilling area.

2. Use a sponge for washing dishes and gently brush it with a raised surface facing the clothes.

3. Transparent tape. Use a wider and more adhesive tape to remove hair balls from clothes.

4. Razor. Use a razor to gently scrapes hair balls from clothing.

5. The hair ball trimmer can effectively remove hair balls from the surface of clothing.
