What Is The Difference Between Plain Fabric And Twill Fabric?

Apr 11, 2024

Firstly, what is plain? What is twill? Plain weave is a structure formed by interweaving warp and weft yarns from top to bottom, while twill weave is a structure formed by continuous diagonal lines at warp (or weft) points, known as a twill weave.

Features of plain fabric:

The feel is hard, the elasticity is small, and the luster is poor, but the fabric is firm and wear-resistant.

The appearance effect of the front and back of the fabric is the same, and under the same specifications, it is the lightest and thinnest compared to other woven fabrics.

Common plain fabrics include plain cloth, poplin, tweed, crepe, linen, polyester, etc.

Features of twill fabric:

Compared with plain fabrics, there are fewer interweaving points within the weaving cycle, there are long floating lines, and the fabric has greater compactness. The fabric is soft and has better luster, but its firmness is not as good as plain fabric.

The appearance of the fabric is different on both sides, such as the right twill on the front ↗, and the left twill on the back ↖.

Common twill fabrics include khaki, denim, serge, silk twill, etc.
