Quilted fabric is formed by wrapping the filler with two pieces of cloth and stitching. Different types of fillers can make quilted fabrics have different degrees of heat-insulating property, and the fillers usually vary in weight and thickness.

Quilted fabric used for making clothes, the outer layer of the fabric is usually cotton, polyester, nylon or a mixture of these fibers. In order to prevent any filler from passing through the outer material, the fabric surface should be tightly woven. The filler of the fabric usually includes the mixture of down and feather, kapok, polyester staple or continuous filament, resin bonded polyester, acrylic staple, polyester or polypropylene microfiber. In terms of thermal insulation, down is more effective than acrylic and polyester fibers. When hollow man-made fiber is used, its insulation performance is slightly higher than that of the same type of solid fiber. Microfibers are 10 times thinner than short fibers, which have stronger ability to intercept air and provide greater insulation.

The quilted fabric needs to be noted that when it becomes wet and water seeps into the filler, the insulation performance will be significantly reduced, but the same is usually true of the fabric. The high-quality quilted fabric suitable for outdoor use should be windproof, its wind-resistance is achieved by weaving the yarn very closely, which can minimize the gap size of the fabric.
