The Science Behind Wool Shrinkage

Wool fibers are covered with tiny, scale-like structures that overlap in one direction, similar to fish scales or the cuticles of human hair. Under a microscope, these scales appear jagged and lie flat against the fiber under normal conditions. However, when wool absorbs water, the fibers swell, causing the scales to lift and form tiny "barbs." If agitated-through rubbing, wringing, or machine tumbling-these raised scales interlock and tangle, much like knotted hair, pulling the fibers tightly together.

Wool also has a natural tendency to "felt." Under warm water and mechanical action, the fibers not only tangle but also shift permanently.
