What Is The Difference Between 21s And 32s Fabric?

Apr 15, 2025

Yarn count refers to the thickness of the yarn and is an important indicator for measuring the quality and characteristics of fabric.

21s Fabric

21s fabric

According to the English yarn count system, a 21s means that 1 pound of yarn measures 21 × 840 yards in length, making it relatively thick. Fabrics made from 21s have a coarser texture, a less refined surface, and average gloss. The requirements for cotton raw material quality are relatively low, and the spinning process is simpler, resulting in higher production efficiency, lower costs, and more affordable prices. This type of fabric is commonly used for workwear and casual clothing that demands high abrasion resistance, as well as home textiles requiring thickness and stiffness, such as thick curtains and sofa covers.

32s Fabric

32s fabric

A 32s means that 1 pound of yarn measures 32 × 840 yards in length, making it finer than 21s. The yarn can be arranged more tightly in the fabric. Fabrics made from 32s have a smoother, flatter surface with finer texture and better gloss, giving garments a more refined appearance. Since higher-count yarn requires longer, finer, and stronger fibers, the raw material quality standards are higher, the spinning process is more challenging, production efficiency is lower, and costs are higher, leading to a more expensive price. This type of fabric is suitable for close-fitting garments like underwear and shirts, as well as high-end clothing and home textiles such as bedding, reflecting superior quality and class.

Comparison of Hand Feel

21s fabric feels relatively stiff and rough to the touch, with a noticeable yarn presence and stronger friction. In contrast, 32s fabric is soft and smooth, providing comfortable skin contact without irritation and offering a better wearing experience.

Breathability and Moisture Absorption

Due to its thicker yarn and larger gaps, 21s fabric allows faster air circulation, resulting in better breathability. Although 32s fabric has finer and more tightly arranged yarn, its breathability is only slightly inferior, with little noticeable difference. However, because of its finer yarn and larger surface area, 32s fabric absorbs and evaporates sweat more quickly, outperforming 21s fabric in moisture absorption.

Durability

Generally, 21s fabric has thicker yarn and higher strength, making it more wear-resistant. However, if 32s fabric uses high-quality raw materials and advanced spinning techniques-such as being twisted into double or multi-ply yarn-its strength and durability can also be significantly improved.
